A review of the Making Things Happen Webinar hosted by Mattie James and Maya Elious

This title is not to disrespect Mother Oprah at all. Like you, I watch her TV specials, I order her books, I read her magazine. I subscribe to many of her mantras and worship at thrones of her quotes. This YouTube clip in particular has been a saving grace for me on days when I cried in the car (or on the train) on the way home from days where I hated my job/existence.

But there comes a point in time where you have to stop seeking external validation (your job, your Mom, your college degree, the bottom of a Talenti jar) on where you’re supposed to be in life and take action for yourself.

Here’s where Mattie James and Maya Elious enter. If you don’t know who they are — and you should know — let me introduce you: Mattie is a lifestyle blogger, host, ultra fab Mom & wife with a podcast, and a believer of living what you love. Maya is a web and brand strategist and helps entreprenuers earn a consistent income. While they are sisters and both bursting at the seams with their individual personalities, both are pretty badass in their own right. I follow their work on a very regular basis, so when I found out that they were offering up a webinar (FREE at that!) I jumped with Beyonce joy and signed up immediately. And as I expected, I wasn’t disappointed.

Like your best friend who calls you out when you’re slacking, not living up to your potential, being unreasonable, irresponsible, or all of those things, Mattie and Maya got into my spirit with these three things that I’ve been wrestling with:

  1. Indecisiveness

Just because you don’t know what to do, doesn’t mean you shouldn’t be doing it. Figure it out. — @Mattieologie #MTHWebinar

I’m a Pisces. We’re always in conflict. I’ve always worried about if I’m doing the right thing and frankly, me constantly analyzing if I’m ready or not to pursue something has caused me to miss out on a lot. The first and most important step to making things happen is making a decision. That simple. Maya and Mattie started with that simple but powerful concept from jump and that action, literally and figuratively, set the tone for the webinar. I even was comforted by this quote below:

It’s okay if you’re feeling unsure but you have to make the decision that you want to be great. — @MayaElious #MTHWebinar

I’ve decided since the webinar that I will be great no matter what and even though I’m still unsure about a lot of things, that declaration has done wonders for my perspective. And my skin. Greatness makes my skin glow.

2. People Pleasing

I don’t need to apologize for fulfilling my purpose. — @MayaElious #MTHWebinar

The thing about always pleasing others is that you never make time for yourself and often neglect what you’re called to do. I did that as a kid. I did that as a teenager. I did that as a college student. I did that for years until I was too worn out and broke down to do it anymore. It’s a bad habit. Real bad, Michael Jackson bad. Even though I’ve let go of that need to put others before myself, I often find myself apologizing when I’m too busy with my blog or working on building upon the things I want, to have time for anything else. But this constant investment in myself is a good thing, as I’ve learned from Mattie:

If you’re not obsessed with it, if this is not in your soul, you shouldn’t capitalize off your idea. — @Mattieologie

I can’t pay attention to those who don’t agree with the way I choose to live my life. My obsession with bettering my life is in my soul right now and I know that all of my hard work will pay off.

3. Be more intentional.

Doing something without intention is really selling yourself short. — @Mattieologie #MTHWebinar

I think I’ve tapped into this before and after a conversation this week with a friend about business echoed Mattie’s sentiment, I’ve learned that intention is important in EVERYTHING you do. I’ve spent a what feels like a million years wondering in circles about how I can make things happen. I’m an expert at wandering, so I now know from experience that being intentional can save you time in the long wrong. You want your ideas, experiences, and the things you build to last? It starts with you. You can’t commit to anything without knowing what you want engraved in mind. Yes, it’s extra work up front but doing so will always pays off:

If you’re constantly adding value and taking care of yourself, you will always get that back. — @MayaElious #MTHWebinar

Making it happen is simple but it won’t be easy. These two made that extremely clear through out the webinar. You can not skip the work but there are things you have to let go of in order to move your life forward: fear, doubt, not having a plan, lack of discipline, lack of belief in yourself, and not prioritizing your needs. Making it happen is a PROCESS. It doesn’t just happen all of a sudden. I now am equipped with enough gems to remind myself to constantly push towards the life I envision. As long as I commit to what I want, invest the right time and energy into it, and continuously make it better, I will make it happen. And yes, Maya, I wrote that down.

You can check out this post by Maya if you missed out on this amazing webinar. Here’s the official website but the replay is only avaiable until Friday, April 10th.
