Why PJ Morton’s ‘According To PJ’ Gospel Album Should Win A 2021 Grammy

The Gospel According to PJ affirms that Black gospel music is an art form in itself.

While it’s already understood that we don’t necessarily rely on institutions like The Recording Academy to validate our creativity, when something deserves its praise, it’s obvious that it deserves its praise on all levels. And it’s obvious to me that PJ Morton’s 2020 release, Gospel According to PJ should win the 2021 Grammy award for Best Gospel Album. The spirit of collaboration runs deep throughout the album, it’s accessible and relevant, and PJ Morton does an incredible job of paying homage to an art form while staying true to himself as an artist. These elements provide for a refreshing collective experience, a bright spot of faith, love, joy, and freedom during dark times. It embodies the heart of Black gospel music and its ability to uplift.

PJ Morton and Yolanda Adams sound so fresh on “Do You Believe” that you feel like you’re gonna be carried to the upper room (it’s that insane horn section on the bridge!) at any moment.
